PECSIG stands for Paediatricians with Expertise in Cardiology, Specialist Interest Group. A society of Children's doctors (Paediatricians) who have developed expertise in heart disease. We are a UK Society governed and accountable to the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health. Our goal is to better serve children and their families through education, collaboration and training.
If you are worried about your child then the first point of call should be your GP, NHS Direct or your local Emergency Department. All doctors are trained to consider heart disease and to examine the heart. If they are worried, then it is likely you will be referred to a Paediatrician. They will review and examine your child. If they agree with your GP they will often ask the local PECSIG expert to see you. All hospitals with a Children's ward should have a PECSIG expert so don't worry we wont be far away.
Paediatric Cardiologists are super-specialists in Children's heart disease. They are often not paediatricians but cardiologists. They work in just a few of the largest hospitals in the UK together with the Children's heart surgeons. If your child needs a heart operation your PECSIG specialist will refer you to them. We always work with the Paediatric Cardiologists. It's all a bit complicated really but put simply PECSIG members look after all sorts of children including children with heart disease. Paediatric Cardiologists only look after children with heart disease, but they look after the most complicated and sickest children with heart disease.
Everything gets better when we work together. We have a few key partners that we work closely with to ensure we keep getting better. We are very grateful to all of these partners for having such a forward looking, child and family centred approach to heart disease. It is this ethos that allows us to work so well together.
